ALZHEIMER’S ASSOCIATION to share latest ‘Discoveries in Research’ at Miami event

alzahemirThe latest breakthroughs in Alzheimer’s disease research will be the primary focus of Discoveries in Research, a free and educational program to be hosted by the Southeast Florida Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association on Tuesday, May 28.

To be held at Florida International University (FIU) in Miami, Discoveries in Research will offer data-driven insight from keynote speaker and Alzheimer’s Association Chief Science Officer Maria C. Carrillo, Ph.D., who sets the strategic vision for the organization’s global research program.

“We are thrilled to have the opportunity for our community to hear directly from Dr. Maria Carrillo,” said Michael Pearson, vice president of programs for the Alzheimer’s Association’s Southeast Florida Chapter. “While we still have a long way to go in the quest for a treatment for Alzheimer’s disease, there are some exciting prospects on the horizon, and there are few people in the world who know more about the hope for the future than Dr. Carrillo.”

The Alzheimer’s Association, which is the world’s largest nonprofit funder of Alzheimer’s research, estimates that a staggering 5.8 million Americans are currently living with Alzheimer’s disease. As home to nearly 560,000 of those individuals, Florida has the second-highest prevalence of the disease in the country.

In addition to current research, the Discoveries in Research program – sponsored by Simply Healthcare – will also address the differences between dementia and Alzheimer’s, the stages and risk factors of the disease, available symptom treatments and the various resources the Alzheimer’s Association has to offer.

“Simply Healthcare is honored to be supporting Discoveries in Research to address what is a serious need in communities across Florida,” said Lourdes Rivas, Medicaid president at Simply Healthcare. “By increasing access to research and support services, we believe the Alzheimer’s Association will help improve lives and potentially find treatment options for this devastating disease.”

The program will begin at 6 p.m. in the auditorium of the FIU Student Academic Success Center, which is located at 11200 S.W. Eighth St. To register or obtain additional information, visit www.alz.org/sefl or call (800) 272-3900.
